Coquitlam Coquitlam, a suburban city with a population of 121,452 (as of 2008), is one of the 21 municipalities of the Metro Vancouver community located in the heart of the Lower Mainland on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada, just a 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver and about 20 minutes from the US border.
Coquitlam is bordered by the municipalities of Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Burnaby and New Westminster, as well as the Fraser River to the south, Pitt River to the east and the Coastal Mountains to the north. Coquitlam has over 80 municipal Parks and Natural Areas totalling over 2,200 acres.
The only major freeway within city limits is Highway 1, which passes through the north-eastern corner of the city.
Walking & Cycling: Three-quarters of residents who live and work in Vancouver's downtown peninsula actually walk to work. Cycling has become Vancouver's fastest growing mode of transportation. Vancouver has a city-wide network of bicycle lanes and routes, you can take your bike with you on the bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus and West Coast Express, and there are bike lockers available at transit stations.
